da bet7: The Premier League champions are on the verge of signing Confederations Cup winner Antonio Rudiger from AS Roma as they attempt to defend their title.
da pinup bet: The Blues have long been after the Germany centre-back and finally seem to have their man. Chelsea fans should be excited about adding one of the World Cup champions’ rising stars.
The centre-back, who is valued at £21.25m by transfermarkt.com, made his first-team debut in the for VFB Stuttgart on 29 January, 2012. Aged just 18, Rudiger started and played 79 minutes at right back against Borussia Monchengladbach. The following season, he played at both centre-back and right back before establishing himself in the middle during the 2013-14 campaign.
Rudiger made 30 starts for Stuttgart, only once on the right, and earned his first Germany cap against Poland as part of Joachim Low’s pre-World Cup training camp. He didn’t make the final squad but had his foot in the senior team door nonetheless.
A meniscus injury allowed Rudiger to play in only 20 games for Stuttgart in 2014-15, but that didn’t put-off Roma from making a summer move the Germany international. Joining initially on loan, the 24-year-old started in 36 of his 37 appearances for the Giallorossi and earned a place on Germany’s Euro 2016 squad.
Unfortunately, the former Dortmund youth player suffered a cruciate ligament injury three days before the tournament and was unable to take part.
Despite missing the first two months of the 2016-17 season, Rudiger never lost form and started in 34 of his 36 Roma appearances. He continued to be a part of the Germany squad and has now accumulated 17 total caps for Joachim Low. He played the full 90 minutes in four of Germany’s five games as they lifted the Confederations Cup trophy this summer, including the final against Chile.
There will be stiff competition for next year’s World Cup squad, but a successful campaign under Antonio Conte would make it difficult for Joachim Low to keep the bruising defender out of his squad.
Rudiger is sure to push for playing time along the Chelsea back line more than John Terry or Nathan Ake were able to last season and he could make the defending champions’ defence even more impenetrable than it was in 16/17.
