da doce: Sheffield United are well in the hunt for promotion from the Championship this season. However, their hopes of gaining an automatic place in the Premier League next term took a hit with a draw against Birmingham last Wednesday night.
The club currently sit in third and if things stayed as they were, would have to go through the play-offs to secure their place in England’s top flight.
As a result of the situation the club currently finds itself in, supporters took to Twitter to discuss the current system in place after an article posted by Sheffield Star journalist, James Shield.
Debating the play-off system, one fan chose to call it a money making scheme for the FA, whilst another individual had similar thoughts, saying it was all about the cash.
A further supporter urged for them to be scrapped but another suggested they were a good idea yet just needed to be changed slightly.
The play-offs at this level of the game were first introduced in 1987 and in recent years have held even greater significance, predominantly because of increased TV revenue.
If the Blades were to finish third then they’d have to play the sixth best team in the division as a result. It would hardly be fair merit for a side who will have performed so well over 46 games.
Here’s the best of the debate.
