Everton boss Marco Silva could secure a bargain alternative to transfer target Abdoulaye Doucoure with a move for former Manchester City midfielder and current free-agent Yaya Toure.
What’s the situation?
After leaving City in the summer, Toure opted to sign for Greek side Olympiacos, where he had also played in the 2005/06 season. However, the club announced in a statement on Tuesday that the 35-year-old had left by mutual consent.
Toure had only made five appearances in all competitions this season, racking up just 222 minutes of football and it is clear that things didn’t work out on his return to Greece.
However, Sky Sports have now reported that the former Ivory Coast international wants to return to play in the Premier League, and that he has already rejected offers from both the Chinese Super League and the MLS. Everton then could be the perfect destination.
Perfect alternative
When he left Manchester City, many clubs would have been put off by the wages that Toure commanded. However, having been on a ‘pay as you play’ deal at Olympiacos he will now surely be willing to accept a smaller wage packet.
This could make him an ideal alternative to Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, who was linked with a reunion with former boss Silva by The Mirror at the end of November, but would surely command a huge fee similar to the capture of Richarlison.
In a similar mould to Toure, Doucoure is a strong and powerful midfielder who likes to drive with the ball at his feet. As Everton found out to their cost on Monday though, he also likes to ghost into the box to get on the scoresheet, but regular watchers of the Premier League will know that Toure has been one of the best at this.
So, Everton fans, would you be keen on a move for Toure to help with the top six bid? Have your say by voting in the poll below.
