da prosport bet: Everton suffered a shock defeat to Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday, and the performance of Dominic Calvert-Lewin should seriously worry Marco Silva.
On the chalkboard
Calvert-Lewin has been a peripheral member of Silva’s squad since the Portuguese manager was appointed in the summer. The 21-year-old forward has made 24 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions but only featured in blue for 985 minutes, as 13 of his outings have been as a substitute.
The FA Cup on Saturday was a great chance, then, for the England Under 20 international to prove his worth to Silva, as his recent displays when starting have not returned the same impact as those at the beginning of the season – Calvert-Lewin netted three goals in three games against Rotherham, Huddersfield and West Ham between August 29th and September 16th.
In contrast, the forward has scored just once in his last six games when starting – the 6 foot 2 Sheffield native netted at the Etihad Stadium when Everton lost 3-1 to Manchester City in December.
On Saturday, the tides never looked like changing and Calvert-Lewin was hauled off after 65 minutes for fellow fringe striker Cenk Tosun, having failed to make an impact.
Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin may be out for the season but it’s given him a chance to show off his new accessory. Check out the video below to see for yourself…
What did Calvert-Lewin offer?
Per WhoScored statistics, Calvert-Lewin was Everton’s worst outfield player of those who started with a match rating of just 6.04. The only players to achieve a lower score were Jordan Pickford and 79th minute substitute Theo Walcott.
The reason Calvert-Lewin achieved such a low score was because he could only complete 50% of his ten attempted passes and despite playing as the centre-forward, six of those efforts came from the left flank as well as two from the right – highlighting how he failed to get into the game and provide a focal point in central areas.
The 21-year-old never appeared likely to challenge Jordan Archer in the Millwall net, either, and WhoScored claim the forward produced just two efforts on goal – both failing to hit the target.
Giving Silva reason to worry
Performances like what Calvert-Lewin produced against Millwall will give Silva magnitudes of reasons to worry, as the football the Portuguese manager is trying to implement is not having the desired effect anymore.
The team are allowing errors to slip in and the end product has lacked far too often for the former Watford boss to watch on comfortably.
Simply changing who is playing as the centre-forward is not enough, either. Tosun may have scored his side’s second goal seven minutes after coming on, but that was the only shot the 27-year-old could fire from his laces during his cameo outing.
Going forward, Calvert-Lewin will have to do something impressive to warrant another start when the Premier League is the focus, but as well as disappointing individual performances, it’s clear Everton aren’t functioning as a team right now.
That should be the ultimate worry for their manager.
